David Coles brings more than four decades of experience from the transport industry, having dedicated his working life to the railway network.

He began his career as a train driver with British Rail, before progressing to become a train driving instructor and assessor. In this role, David worked extensively across the country, sharing his expertise and supporting the training and development of drivers, before eventually retiring under Great Western Railway (GWR).

David’s connection to Cornwall dates back to the 1970s, when he first moved to the county. Although his railway career later took him back upcountry, the pull of Cornwall remained strong. In 1996, he returned permanently, initially settling in Stepaside before moving to the village of St Stephen, where he has lived ever since and considers home.

Deeply committed to local service, David first became a parish councillor in the early 2000s, serving for approximately four years. After a period away, he returned to the Parish Council in June 2023. He currently serves as Chair of the Finance Committee and also sits on the Property and Services Committee and the Planning and Licensing Committee, contributing his experience and practical approach to council decision-making.

Beyond his council role, David is highly involved in community life. He has been Vice Chairman of St Stephen Community Centre and has remained closely involved with the organisation for many years. He is also a dedicated volunteer and fundraiser for Children’s Hospice South West, a role he has proudly undertaken for the past six years. In addition, David sits on the committee of the Sticker Vintage Rally and Country Fayre, helping to support and promote this popular local event.

A keen vintage transport enthusiast, David owns two vintage tractors, which many residents may recognise as they make a festive appearance driving through the village with Christmas lights each December.

With his lifelong background in rail, David also maintains a strong interest in public transport more broadly and is particularly passionate about the importance of reliable and accessible bus services for local communities.
