Post Boxes to Heaven Installed in Nanpean and St Stephen Churchtown Cemeteries

St Stephen in Brannel Parish Council is delighted to announce the installation of special Post Boxes to Heaven in both Nanpean Cemetery and St Stephen Churchtown Cemetery. These post boxes provide a safe and meaningful way for people of all ages to write to loved ones they have lost.

Our residents can write letters, cards, and messages to their loved ones – they can send birthday cards, anniversary cards, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day messages, or any note, in any written format, regardless of when the loved one passed or where their funeral service took place. Every letter or card placed into the memorial post box will be treated with the utmost respect and confidentiality. Messages are stored securely and are never opened or read.

The idea of Letters to Heaven started in 1994 in Australia, offering a way for the bereaved to express their feelings, communicate with those they have lost, and find comfort through writing. Since then, the concept has spread worldwide, supporting grieving families and communities.

Adding a special community touch, pupils from Nanpean Community Primary School and St Stephen Churchtown Academy have been helping to give each post box a unique new name, chosen and created by them. Their creativity and care bring an extra sense of community spirit to this thoughtful project.

Cllr Julie Broad, Chairman of St Stephen in Brannel Parish Council, said:

“These Post Boxes are about offering comfort and connection in a gentle, private way. Grief touches everyone differently, and having a safe place to write letters, cards, or messages can be a small but meaningful step in remembering loved ones.

It’s especially wonderful to involve our local schoolchildren in renaming the post boxes. Their input reminds us that community comes in many forms and that even the youngest among us can contribute to something deeply meaningful.

We hope these post boxes bring comfort to everyone in the community who wishes to stay connected with those they have lost.”

The Post Boxes will be available for use from Friday 5th December 2025, just in time for Christmas. The Parish Council looks forward to sharing the children’s chosen names and more information later this week.
