What Are Local Councils?

July 17th 2020

Local council is a universal term for community, neighbourhood, parish and town councils. They are the first tier of local government and are statutory bodies. They serve electorates and are independently elected and raise their own precept (a form of council tax). There are 10,000 local councils in England with over 30% of the country parished and 100,000 councillors who serve in these local councils.

Local (parish and town) councils across the whole country will be the centre of community effort, the natural focus of a range of public activity and service delivery, giving a democratic voice to those communities in other agencies’ deliberations working in partnership with them. Vibrant, dynamic and effective local councils will help communities help themselves build strength and resilience and improve residents’ quality of life.
