Christmas waste and recycling collections

December 03rd 2018

The festive season is almost upon us and so as thoughts naturally turn to waste and recycling, here’s an update on kerbside collections over the Christmas and New Year period.

As in previous years, there will be no waste and recycling collections on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

Collections due on Christmas Day:

  • Rubbish due to be collected on Christmas Day will be collected on Tuesday 1 January.
  • Recycling due to be collected on Christmas Day will be collected on Saturday 22 December.
  • Garden waste due to be collected on Christmas Day will be collected on Saturday 22 December.

Collections due on Boxing Day:

  • Rubbish due to be collected on Boxing Day will be collected on Wednesday 2 January.
  • Recycling due to be collected on Boxing Day will be collected on Saturday 29 December.
  • Garden waste due to be collected on Boxing Day will be collected on Saturday 29 December.

Cornwall Council have included details of these rescheduled collections on their website at www.cornwall.gov.uk/christmas.  They have also produced a Christmas rubbish collection poster.

For collections due on any other day of the week over the Christmas period, Cornwall Council will collect waste and recycling as usual. It might be that the time of collection is earlier or later than usual, but as long as bins and/or recycling (and garden waste if residents subscribe to this service) are out by 7am, they’ll collect as usual.

Waste and recycling collections continue as normal on New Year’s Day.

This year they have also produced an updated version of ‘Your household rubbish and recycling guide’ which includes information about Christmas collections, a 2018/19 calendar and answers to a host of frequently asked questions about waste and recycling. As garden waste and recycling is collected on an alternate weekly schedule (as you will probably know, some households have their recycling collected one week and others the following week) they have produced two versions of the leaflet with the calendar linked to the week in which the household’s recycling will be collected . Anyone unsure about which week is their recycling week can also check in the ‘My Area’ section on the home page of our website at www.cornwall.gov.uk

This leaflet is currently being sent out to all households across Cornwall to make sure all are aware of the operational changes over Christmas – it’s also a good opportunity to remind residents about what they can recycle as part of our kerbside collection service.
There is information on their website about collections, Household Waste and Recycling Centre closures over Christmas, what residents can recycle and how they can reduce waste. Visit www.cornwall.gov.uk/christmas

Assisted collections

Residents registered for assisted collections which are due to take place on Christmas Day or Boxing Day will have their rubbish and recycling collected on the rescheduled dates as listed above.

Clinical waste

Clinical waste collections due on Christmas Day and Boxing Day will take place the following week, on the usual collection day. Households registered for clinical waste collection will receive a letter explaining the changes over Christmas. Anyone with concerns about keeping their clinical waste for an extra week can contact Cornwall Council on 0300 1234 141 and they will try to arrange a collection in the interim.

Christmas tree collections

Cornwall Council will collect real Christmas trees (under 6ft) for composting the week beginning 7 January. This year they’re asking residents to register with them by 12pm on Friday 4 January if they would like to use this service. More information is available at www.cornwall.gov.uk/christmas. They will then collect the tree on the alternate week to the recycling collection. Residents using this service are asked to place their tree out for collection beside their rubbish on the kerbside.

Real Christmas trees can also be taken to our Household Waste and Recycling Centres.

We hope you find this information useful – if you have any questions please contact the waste and recycling team on 0300 1234 141 www.cornwall.gov.uk/refuseandrecycling.
